PRE-ANESTHETIC BLOOD TESTING

PRE-ANESTHETIC BLOOD TESTING

As pets age, their body’s can change without showing any outward signs. For patients undergoing any anesthetic procedure, it is important to evaluate their internal organs and blood cells to avoid any undesired results with the anesthetic. This testing involves the following:

  1. Complete Blood Count which evaluates red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. It can identify things such as anemia, infections, platelet deficiencies. (Platelets are essential to proper blood clotting)
  2. Blood Chemistries – This is a group of 10 tests which checks blood sugar, kidney function, serum proteins, and liver function. A problem with the kidney or liver can affect the ability of a patient to excrete the anesthetic agent, causing them to have delayed recoveries.
